چکیده

Rainwater itself is free from pathogens and contamination levels of stored rainwater are generally low if tanks are well protected with covers or lids but obvious sources of contamination of the rainwater runoff can originate from faecal matter deposited by birds, frogs, possums, rodents, and dead animals and insects, either on the roofs or in the gutters, or in the water tank itself. A number of national and international studies have shown that the microbiological quality of roof-collected rainwater is usually poor, often fails to meet drinking water standards, and frequently there is evidence of faecal contamination in the stored roof water. In a significant number of roof water supplies of private dwellings in New Zealand where we found heavy faecal contamination, there was evidence of poorly designed delivery systems and storage tanks, and failure to adopt physical measures to safeguard the water against microbiological contamination. A variety of low maintenance products and systems are now available in New Zealand for reducing, and in some situations even eliminating, microbial contamination of stored rainwater. In this paper we present the results of a preliminary study in which we evaluated the effectiveness of some of these products and systems. The study involved an intensive microbiological analysis of roof-collected rainwater samples collected over nine months and covered a range of climatic conditions.

A Rainwater Harvesting Technology by Roof Coating Using TiO2

Rainwater utilization has great potentials for recovering hydrological cycles, for buffering extreme run-off situations in the watercourses, and for reducing the costs for water supply in urban area. However, little information is available on the water qualities and runoff properties of collected rainwater, which is critical for efficient design and maintenance strategies of rainwater harvesti...

Roof selection for rainwater harvesting: quantity and quality assessments in Spain.

Roofs are the first candidates for rainwater harvesting in urban areas. This research integrates quantitative and qualitative data of rooftop stormwater runoff in an urban Mediterranean-weather environment. The objective of this paper is to provide criteria for the roof selection in order to maximise the availability and quality of rainwater. Four roofs have been selected and monitored over a p...

Role of rainwater harvesting for improving the human well-being and ecosystem services

Ecosystem services are fundamental for human well-being and are the basis of rural livelihoods, particularly for poor people. Rainwater harvesting can serve as an opportunity to enhance ecosystem productivity, thereby improving livelihoods, human well-being, and economies. Rainwater harvesting has been shown to create synergies between landscape management and human well-being. These synergi...

Identifying the major influences on the microbial composition of roof harvested rainwater and the implications for water quality.

Perceptions of the quality of roof harvested rainwater remain an impediment to widespread implementation of rainwater tanks on urban allotments. Previous literature reports on roof water quality have given little consideration to the relative significance of airborne environmental micro-organisms to roof catchment contamination and the issue of tank water quality. This paper outlines the findin...

A Legionnaires' disease outbreak: a water blaster and roof-collected rainwater systems.

In February 2006, an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease (LD) was identified in Beachlands, a small, isolated east Auckland suburb. It was investigated through case finding, a case-control study, sampling potential sources of infection and by molecular typing (using sequence-based typing (SBT) of all Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 (Lp1) isolates). Lp1 was isolated from the respiratory tract o...
